Title
The University of Maryland

Abstract
The University of Maryland, College Park (also known as UM, UMD, or UMCP) is a public university located in the city of College Park, in Prince George's County, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C., in the United States. Founded in 1856, the University of Maryland is the flagship institution of the state of Maryland, and is considered to be a "Public Ivy" by authors Howard and Matthew Greene of Greene's Guides (2001), defined by the authors as a public institution that "provides an Ivy League collegiate experience at a public school price". The University is most often referred to as the University of Maryland or simply Maryland, even though its formal name remains University of Maryland, College Park. The University of Maryland's location near Washington, D.C., has created strong research partnerships, especially with government agencies. Many of the faculty members have funding from federal agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Department of Defense, and the National Security Agency. It is a member of the Association of American Universities. As of fiscal year 2007, the University of Maryland, College Park's operating b...

Hovercraft Design - Maryland Part 1 of 3

Abstract

This is part 1 of 3 videos from the hovercraft design competition at the University of Maryland, Colllege Park. Part of ENES 100 program. The idea was to keep the hovercraft on the black guide line as it moved forward through the channel. There were two tricky turns the vehicles were needed to maneuver. A Lego Mindstorms NXT kit was programmed to control the vehicle.

A short extract from Wikipedia - (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hovercraft) A Hovercraft, or Air-Cushion Vehicle (ACV), is an amphibious vehicle or craft, designed to travel over any sufficiently smooth surface supported by a cushion of slowly moving, high-pressure air, ejected downwards against the surface close below it.Hovercraft have one or mo...

Influence of a Streamwise Pressure Gradient o...

Abstract

In this video, Kiran Dellimore gives a broad overview of his research paper entitled  'Influence of a Streamwise Pressure Gradient on Film-Cooling Effectiveness' published in the JOURNAL OF THERMOPHYSICS AND HEAT TRANSFER,Vol. 23, No. 1, January-March 2009. His co-authors are Carlos Cruz, Andre W. Marshall, and Christopher P. Cadou all from the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland 20742.

The paper may be accessed using the following DOI: 10.2514/1.35717

Film cooling is widely used in conventional gas turbine and rocket engines to minimize thermal loading of engine structures and to manage heat transfer between hot, reacting gases and cooler structural components. Previous experimental work has shown that streamwise pressure gradients strongly influence the performance of the film. This paper extends semi-empirical modeling ideas for wall-jet film cooling to include the effects of adverse and favorable pressure gradients. The extended model shows that a pressure gradient’s effect on cooling performance depends on whether the velocity of the film is greater than the core flow (a wall-jet...
